(Kaga no kuni Atake no shin-seki nite Yoshitsune shuju) Benkei reading his scroll (kwanjincho) to Togashi Sayemon at the Ataka Barrier, he and his party dressed as monks. Published by Yeshima, Censors' seal: Yoshimura, No blockcutter's mark, Signed Ichiyûsai Kuniyoshi ga (on each sheet) 一勇斎国芳画. Reference; Robinson, Kuniyoshi: The Warrior-Prints (1982), list #T126 (Page 174). A legendary episode from the life of the great warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Disguised as yamabushi (mountain priests), Yoshitsune and his men attempted to slip across the border into Kaga Province to escape the wrath of his brother, Yoritomo. Charged with intercepting them at the Ataka Barrier, the nobleman Togashi became suspicious of the group, so they told him they were collecting funds for temple restoration. Togashi asked Benkei to read a list of the contributors, so thinking quickly, he read a fake subscription list from a scroll. Here, he holds the scroll high above his head as Togashi watches him with an angry frown. Noblemen line the pavilion, glaring sternly at the monks gathered in the cobblestone courtyard. Excellent colour and impression, three seperate panels, the central panel paper backed, vertical fold near the edge of each panel, some repairs and slight soiling, generally very good condition.
