Further Info:
Station No:3 Kawasaki from 53 Stations of the Tokaido as published by Tsujiokaya Bunsuke, 1852, 2nd month. Censors' seals: Fuku, Muramatsu, Rat intercalary Blockcutter's mark: Hori Take Printer's mark: Suri Ôkyû 改印:福、村松、子閏 彫師:彫竹 摺師:摺大久. Horst Graebner on his wonderful Kunisada website ( www.kunisada.de ) thinks this was one of part of a diptych series. It shows Iwai Hanshiro V as the bandit Shirai Gompachi with his hand on the hilt of his sword. Behind him is Kawasaki station with passengers being ferried across the river (Tama ?). Excellent impression and colours, in good condition, a few holes well repaired, slight soiling and creasing. |
